10 Hidden Benefits Of Donating Blood

Why should you donate blood?

You know a lot of the typical reasons. 60% of the population is eligible to donate blood but only 5% donates. During times of disaster, blood is in short supply. Eventually most of us will need blood sometime in our lives. But here are some of the other benefits of donating blood.

1. Practicing Altruism

You're doing something good for the world and saving people's lives -- Okay this one wasn't so hidden but still worth mentioning. Altruism is what makes humans...humans. And is something we need a lot of practice in.

2. Knowing Your Blood Type

You'll know your blood type. Finally.

3. Diagnose Low Iron or Anemia

You'll quickly find out if you have low iron or anemia. Are you getting enough iron in your diet? If not your body can't produce enough hemoglobin. Women especially need a diet rich in bio-available iron. This may be a wake up call to take further action regarding your own personal health.

4. Do I have Unknown Illnesses?!

If rejected, you'll get a letter telling you if you have any illnesses you may not have been aware of. So it works both ways, the process of donating blood may save your own life!

They ask you about places you've traveled, unsafe behaviors, and family history. Things you may not have connected to your own health.

5. Get A Free Mini Physical

It's a free mini physical. They take blood pressure, temperature, heart rate, iron, hemoglobin with a thorough health questionnaire. You can learn a lot about yourself from just your blood.

6. The Only Cleanse And Detox

It's the only real and proven way to detoxify and cleanse your system. Since toxins exist in your blood and organs, donating some of your old blood forces your body to create new clean blood. You do this regularly over time and not only will you be doing something good for others, but for yourself as well.

You can do all the cleanses, juices, and detoxes you want but it will do nothing as far as removing real toxins in your body -- no matter how much you paid for it. And this is free. A cleanse that benefits others, imagine that!

If you're a person who's into cleansing, chances are you're also into helping others so stand by your own principles.

7. Makes You Happy

You'll feel good about what you did. That something you did that day actually mattered. It's not every day we can say that. Be proud. Happiness is about meaning and helping others. Your act had meaning, and it benefited others.

8. Become A Part Of An Altruistic Community

You'll be around other people looking to help the world. How often are you surrounded by people where the only reason you have come together was for the sake of altruism? Come on be honest.

9. Treatment For Hemochromatosis Or Iron Overload

If you're someone who has too much iron, this is a good way to keep it in check and lower it. Donating blood is not only a way to check low iron; on the flip side, it's an instant actionable way to deal with too much iron. And they need blood rich in iron. That's a win win in my book.

10. Become A Hero

Someone needs blood every 2 seconds in this country. In my book, that makes you a f'n hero!

I'm convinced, where can I donate?

Check out the Red Cross or any of your local hospitals, especially the children's hospitals.
